People We Serve
Points of Interest

Since the Charlotte White Center’s opening in 1979 the agency staff and board members have dedicated themselves to improving the quality of life opportunities for adults and children with the life challenges of mental illness or mental retardation. Over the years we have been inspired by the great achievements of so many of the individuals we serve. We have also been quite fortunate to have the chance to form lasting and meaningful partnerships with these same individuals.

In providing residential living options those partnerships have a chance to deepen and grow in very special and unique ways. Shelter is such a basic need that the lack of a good living environment can substantially impede progress in other areas of life. Providing people with a stable living environment allows individuals to focus on personal growth in other dimensions such as friendships, employment, long-term recovery, and full community inclusion.

The Charlotte White Center excels in the mission of developing and sustaining healthy, long-term and supportive living options. The observations of one of our Board members reflects our success. He was in a position to observe consumers “cycling” in and out of the former Bangor Mental Health Institute, and noticed that when people who had a long history of unsuccessful community placements left BMHI and went to the Charlotte White Center their “cycling” behaviors ceased and they stayed in the community. The deep and lasting commitment of our staff to assisting consumers combined with the consumers desire for self-fulfillment makes this transformation possible.

 ADULT RESIDENTIAL OPTIONS

Development and Intellectual Disability Services

  • Supported Living - These homes provide an in-house staff person to reside with the tenants twenty-four hours per day, seven days per week. This service can also be customized to meet individual preferences for less intensive supports.
  • Assisted Living -These are our adult “waiver level” foster homes where there is a larger tenant base and an option of “live in” or “shift staff.” These two homes are licensed under the Department of Human Services.
  • Shared Living – This is a customized living arrangement that supports adults and children who are seeking control over their living arrangements and is based on meeting individual needs and preferences. A “host family” provides a home for an individual within a family environment, or “companion living” which allows the individual being served to live in their own home with a “roommate” who serves as a personal companion.
  • Outreach - This intervention provides in-home direct service staff supports to individuals who are in need of support to maintain their community living arrangement. Direct service staff focus on assisting individuals with full community inclusion.

Mental Health Services

  • Private Non-Medical (PNMI) – This endeavor provides part-time staff support to individuals in recovery from mental illness. Residents are living independently in their own apartments or homes and employ intermittent support to maintain their lifestyles.
  • Outreach - This intervention provides in-home direct service staff supports to individuals who are in need of support to maintain their community living arrangement. Direct service staff focus on assisting individuals with full community inclusion.

CHILDREN’S RESIDENTIAL OPTIONS

Mental Health Services

  • Children’s Residential Mental Health - This is a licensed private non-medical home providing an intensive and therapeutic intervention for children with behavioral challenges who are under the custody of the Department of Human Services. Staffing is a 24-hour/7 day per week model.
