Descriptions of programs:
The Morning Program is a day treatment/habilitation program which operates in a small group setting. The staff to consumer ratio is maximized at 1:4 with an additional “floating” staff person assigned to rotate between consumers as needed and provide 1:1 time/assistance. This program offers close supervision and individualized attention. Smaller groups allow staff to focus on treatment plans which often include increasing communication skills, sensory integration, and physical motor skills. Community Outings are offered to each consumer once a week. Some of the routinely scheduled outings include bowling once a month, eating out in the community once a month, swimming at the YMCA weekly, as well as specialized outings based on the interests and abilities of the consumer. Hours of this program are 8:30am -1:00 pm Monday through Friday.
Afternoon Program at Bangor Hill Site and Downtown Afternoon Program are day treatment/habilitation programs, both of which are structured in small groups. The staff to consumer ratio is 1:5 and the groups of five are assembled based on the needs, abilities and interests of the participants. Activity is the focus of this program with weekly outings to practice community skills at shopping centers and restaurants, additional weekly trips to the YMCA to swim or exercise in the fitness room, monthly trips to the local bowling alley, and additional weekly trips to the local libraries. In addition the groups tend to be even more active in the summer with group specific activities enjoyed by the consumers such as fishing trips, community service activities, picnics, group nature walks etc. One of these sites is in a country setting surrounded by fields while the other is located in Downtown Dover-Foxcroft. Hours of these programs are 1:00 pm-5:30 pm Monday through Friday.
The Elders Program is a day treatment/habilitation program serving older participants. The consumers of this program tend to have more sedentary activity preferences. There are twelve full time consumer slots in this program with the consumers divided into two groups of six. There is one full time staff in each group of six with an additional “floating” staff person available for extra assistance and 1:1 time. Community integration is also offered to this group although the frequency of outings is less than some of the other programs. Routine sing-alongs, crafts, puzzles, reminiscence materials and holiday parties tend to be popular activities often chosen by these consumers. Hours of this program are 8:30 am-1:00 pm Monday through Friday.
Haven Program is a unique day treatment/habilitation program offered in a highly structured large group format. The program space is a room large enough for twelve consumers and two staff. The focus of the program is group dynamics and developing social and independent living skills. The staff guides the topics of the group and brings in entertaining hands on activities specific to the “theme” of discussion. Some examples of skill building group activities include but are not limited to voting responsibilities, community service, grocery shopping, problem solving and emergency skills. The program also has a scheduled weekly cooking class and each participant gets involved. Outings are offered and often coincide with the current theme. Hours of this program are 8:30 am-1:00 pm Monday through Friday.
Community Based Program is our only day treatment/habilitation program that is offered “without walls”. The consumers of this program do not go into a program site each day. Rather, all these groups’ skill building activities take place entirely in the surrounding communities. The groups are small 3-4 consumers with one staff and are matched according to interests and abilities. Community contacts, natural and peer supports are encouraged and fostered through this program. Opportunities are offered to be included in any agency activities and some of the other more traditional programs special activities. Hours of this program vary depending on the group both in the morning and the afternoon Monday through Friday.
The Art Program is a program currently existing within the framework of all of the above mentioned day habilitation programs. We have on staff an experienced art educator who travels to all of the programs and groups and offers a structured art time. During this time concepts and techniques of art are applied to the activity presented to the group. The lesson is taught to the individual in a manner best suited to the individuals learning needs. Throughout the process freedom of expression, attention span, ability to follow directions and self esteem are developed. It is an option for a consumer to be a consumer of just the art program without attending a day habilitation program. Those individuals would be invited to participate in the art classes offered to the other program groups. Some of the art generated in these classes is then reproduced, marketed, displayed and offered for resale with 75% of the purchase price returning to the artist. Hours of this program vary depending on the group Monday through Friday.
