The Charlotte White Center has been delivering mental health services for over twenty-eight years. Throughout our long history of service we have looked to develop programs of support and partnership with individuals working to bring about positive change in their lives. We now offer a customized, one to one; community based teaching/training service for adults working on recovery issues associated with a mental health diagnosis. These services are offered under two domains, personal skills and employment skills.
Skills Development Services are based on a psychosocial rehabilitation model. This approach assists individuals in converting their “life challenges” into events that they can learn to control and change in a positive manner.
BASIC PRINCIPLES
1. Individuals’ skills and available resources are directly related to the size of their support network, both natural and professional.
2. Skills Development staff assist individuals in assessing both their skills and resources and whether those important elements are present or absent from their lives.
3. Individuals work with staff to create a partnership with their Skills Development Coach to develop their own self-determined rehabilitation goals.
4. These goals are then broken into manageable steps and form the basis for chosen activities.
EMPLOYMENT SKILLS
The Employment Skills Development Program assists individuals in obtaining and maintaining employment.
Typical challenges that might be addressed in obtaining employment are:
- Interviewing skills
- Resume writing
- Marketing your skills and abilities
- Presenting yourself appropriately
- Application dos and don’ts
- What employers want
And if you are already employed
- How can you keep your job?
- Problem solving skills
- Communication Skills
- What supports do I need?
PERSONAL SKILLS
Skills Development works to implement a teaching/coaching approach that provides practical knowledge, specific skills training interventions, and the personal development of consumer resources. Typical challenges that individuals choose to address are:
- improving interpersonal skills,
- managing impulsive behavior,
- understanding and managing behavior,
- using routine organization and scheduling to manage stress and anxiety,
- using effective problem-solving,
- understanding mental illness and the importance of medication compliance,
- learning to adapt to change,
- understanding how to use resources appropriately and effectively,
- understanding and using money management skills, and
- using appropriate assertive, self-advocacy skills, and preventing relapse.
COMMUNITY INTEGRATION
Community Integration Services, formerly known as Case Management can play a critical role in making the connections for individuals seeking skills development services. While Community Integration Services are not required in order to access Skills Development Services, the two components often complement each other by creating a stronger bond and a solid foundation for the consumer seeking services to build upon. (Please refer to our Community Integration Services page for more information.)
STAFF QUALIFICATIONS
Professional staff, certified as Mental Health Rehabilitation Technicians Level II (MHRT-C), provide Skills Development Services.
ELIGIBILITY
An individual is eligible for this service if they meet certain criteria:
- AMHI Consent Decree Class Member
or
- a person 18 years of age or older and
- has an Axis I or Axis II diagnosis; and
- scores at 50 or below on the global assessment of functioning (GAF); and
- rates in need of service on the Locus Assessment Tool.
Once eligibility is determined, a plan to identify Skills Development goals will be created with the individual being served, and staff will be assigned to work with the individual on obtaining and keeping those goals
REFERRAL PROCESS
The Charlotte White Center believes in the “no wrong door policy” for accessing mental health services as promoted by the State of Maine. We encourage referrals from individuals, family members, medical community, case managers, or service providers. Once the referral is made, a time for an initial intake will be scheduled. The intake involves gathering all the data necessary to determine eligibility.
